Imperial Stout was first consumed by the Russian Tsarina Catherine II, hence the adjective "imperial". At least, that's how it's known. In reality, the situation is more logical. The British wanted to please the Tsarina, and in the spirit of the times, they did so with a gift cask of beer. However, the "weak" 5-6% stout was feared to not last the voyage. The original recipe was carefully peppered up so that the 10-12% beer could be shipped without any problems.
