This type of beer, which is essentially a drinking beer, was originally produced in the Walloon region of French-speaking Belgium, mainly concentrated in the harvest period. They were originally low-alcohol products to avoid knocking out the workers, but pub versions already existed. After the 2nd World War, the stronger, different coloured versions appeared.
The most famous modern saison, Saison Dupont, was first produced in the 1920s. Originally a rustic, artisan ale made from ingredients grown by local farmers, it is now produced almost exclusively by large breweries, retaining its simple originality.
