As with all BJCP-compliant beers brewed for competition, the key is to
know the style and stick to the recipe, no matter how tempting!


Rauchbier is basically a German lager made with smoked malt. Therefore, in order to
to be successful in a competition, you have to make it a success! That meant 3 months for me back in the day. It is important to
you need beech smoked malt, which is specifically for bacon,
smoked ham notes. The recipe below was a Mini BOS winner in 2023 at the XI Budapest BOS.
In the category of Dark and Strong Lager, it was awarded the BOS
Mad Scientist special prize for the first time. Rumoured to be among the top three beers at the BOS

Malt:

3kg Viking beech smoked pilsner

1kg Viking Caramel 150

0,5kg Viking Pilsner

 

Hops (+ boiling time):

30g Perle - 60perc

Yeast:

Novalager
