As with all BJCP-compliant beers brewed for competition, the key is to
know the style and stick to the recipe, no matter how tempting!
Schwarzbier or Black Beer is a German lager, so it lives here to be aced! That's 3 for me
months for me. The essence of the style is to be black in colour, with a nice roast coffee flavour,
with a dark chocolate character, but not as characterful or as strong as, say, a stout.
It should be around 5% alcohol, so you don't overdo the bitterness in the beer, which is
not only the hops but also the roasted malt.
