Details

The history of Irish red ale dates back to the early 1700s. It was then that the merchant Daniel Sullivan brewed the first red ale in Kilkenny. Today, one of the best known red beers is Kilkenny branded and owned by Heineken, who bought the brewery in the 1960s. Going back to Sullivan, he travelled extensively as a merchant, the Kilkenny area being particularly favourable for growing cereals, with a climate suitable for maturing spirits. By 1782 there were 8 distilleries in the town.

The town is still home to many cult breweries and pubs. Unfortunately, the unpredictable political situation forced the family to sell the brewery in 1918. Until the 1960s the beer was only available in Ireland. In 1965 the brand was bought by Heineken who positioned the beer as an international premium. In 1982, the American beer giant Coors began producing Irish red under licence, around which time the American version was developed, becoming a hoppier higher-alcohol beer.
